Redefining humanity... change we need!

A few days ago I heard a friend of mine mention a certain thing and I never ceased thinking about it. He said,” Humanity is being redefined...”, distraught, that there was no kindness left in the human heart!

Unfortunately I completely differ...

Humanity is not being redefined just because we hurt each other, that is how humanity has been, it has never been defined in any other way! In fact that is exactly what we need today, to redefine humanity, in its entirety.

We humans have been the same, since the origin of species,”Animals”. And that is precisely the fact we tend to ignore, the undeniable fact that at the end of the day we are animals, I remember this dialog from 'prison break' series, season 03, very vividly, it never left my mind, "it is so easily that humans become animals...”

Since the beginning of time humans have evolved; developed philosophies of god, of justice and freedom, of oneness, and also diversity. Diversity that runs deep in our blood; that has been around forever that we can no longer see each other as brothers or as equals. We see religion in each others names (courtesy “Wednesday” the movie); we see color in each other’s faces; we practice racism or discrimination without even realizing it mostly, that is how deep diversity has conquered our minds.

First there is religion; all religions preach the same thing “Love”; unconditional, unadulterated. Then Laws that preach some what the same principle but in very different way, it broadcasts the NOT’s, it preaches against evil. Humanity mocks at them, and treads nonchalantly on its own path toward another day of redefining itself, not for the better; day after day one step at a time.

On December 10, 1948 the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The preamble of which states “Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world”. But to this day nothing has stopped; bloodshed, discrimination, pain, poverty, misery; nothing! The rate of discriminations has not diminished in the last decade; there still are unexplained deaths in lock ups; war crimes that cannot be put into words; slavery and denial of rights. World reports are brought out every year on human rights watch, we still have the reports coming; world will be a better place when we shed the need for these reports finally, my heart aches for utopia!

We talk about movies/ sports on the radio, TV and several other sources of mass communication, but how well have we created awareness for the issue of human rights. And whenever a voice is raised to acquire it, politics/ power feel it as a rise of a revolution, an awakening that should be stopped and it is ensured that the voice is suppressed.

Democracy in itself is not a voice. Voice is the only weapon non-violence provides and advocates never letting go of. Voice is the weapon that has led to revolutions and brings out the notion of Equality and peace. Voice of people, of the oppressed is the key that opened doors to justice and freedom. Voice is never out of fashion, it commands faith and strength, which is what we need.

It commands to shout, if oppressed when spoken; to yell, if oppressed when shouting; to scream until the voice is heard. That is the voice we need.

And as I have always believed the world is a ying yang, the universe conspires to establish equilibrium, to preserve rightly, the laws of conservation of energy... There is no good without bad. There is always a dark side to a bright day. It is undeniable. And you can never live without hurting someone else or neither can you survive if you want to be beyond mistakes... We are not all mahatmas but nothing should stop us from trying to be one!

I’m reminded of a beautiful quote of Jimi Hendrix: "When the power of love overcomes the love for power the world will know peace"!

But the only thing that is asked of humanity is to draw the line where we start to become animals. That is the awakening that is necessary today; in the age, where the world is indeed divided into fragments by the narrow domestic walls; where freedom and free will are only a dream and democracy valued only as much as the votes cost!

The best way to fight fear is to confront it... Mine is the fear of the world of tomorrow... I fear not for me but for the generations to come... I know not how to fight; I know not how to confront... I live a half life; life bounded by domestic walls... the other fighting to find a voice to scream!
